1. Labor

Each job has standard labor hours. Hours × your billed rate, times the after-hours multiplier for nights and emergencies. Service plan members get a discount on labor only.

2. Materials and trip

Your materials cost plus markup covers buying, picking up and warranty. Sales tax is added where it applies, and a trip fee covers the drive.

3. Profit check

Tech pay, materials, tax and vehicle cost come off. Revenue before tax ÷ labor hours is compared with your target to say Good, Thin or Too low.

Questions

How much should a handyman charge per hour?

Many US handyman businesses bill about $65 to $125 per hour, depending on the area, insurance and skill. Licensed trades such as HVAC, plumbing and electrical usually bill more. Set the rate that covers tech pay, vehicle, insurance and profit, then check each estimate against your target per labor hour.

Should I mark up materials?

Yes. A 20% to 50% markup on materials is common. It pays for time spent buying and picking up parts, returns, and warranty on what you install.

Flat-rate pricing or time and materials?

Flat-rate pricing gives customers one clear price and rewards fast techs. It works best when every job has standard hours, like the price list above. Keep time and materials for jobs you can’t scope in advance.

What is a trip or service call fee?

A fixed charge, often $49 to $129, that covers the drive and the first look. Many businesses waive or credit it if the customer books the work.
