Tile Calculator

Find out how many tiles and boxes you need for a floor or wall, including extra for cuts and breakage.

How the tile calculator works

Enter the length and width of the area in feet, pick your tile size, add a percentage for waste and say how many tiles come in a box. The calculator finds the area, adds the waste allowance and divides by the area of one tile. It rounds up to whole tiles and whole boxes.

The formulas

Area = length x width
Tiles = (area x (1 + waste %)) / area of one tile, rounded up

Example: A 12 ft by 10 ft room with 12 x 12 inch tiles and 10% waste needs 132 tiles. At 10 tiles per box that is 14 boxes.

Use 10 percent waste for straight layouts and 15 to 20 percent for diagonal patterns or rooms with many corners. Buy a few spare tiles for future repairs.

    Frequently asked questions

    How many tiles do I need for a 12 x 10 room?

    The area is 120 square feet. With 12 inch tiles and 10 percent waste you need about 132 tiles.

    How much waste should I allow for tile?

    Plan for 10 percent on a straight layout and 15 to 20 percent for diagonal layouts or complex rooms.

    How do I measure for tile?

    Measure the length and width of each area in feet and multiply them. Split odd shapes into rectangles and add them.

    Do I include grout lines?

    Grout lines are small, so most people ignore them. Large tiles with wide joints may need a little extra.

    What size tile is best?

    Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines and a cleaner look, but they can be harder to lay on uneven floors.
