Gravel Calculator
Enter the size of your driveway, path or bed to see how many cubic yards and tons of gravel you need to order.
How the gravel calculator works
Suppliers sell gravel by the ton or by the cubic yard. This calculator finds the volume of your area in cubic yards, adds an allowance for waste and settling, and converts the volume to tons using a density.
Crushed gravel typically weighs roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on the stone size, type and moisture, so the default is 1.4. Ask your supplier for the exact figure for your material and change the density box to match. Also ask the supplier or your contractor what depth your project needs.
The formulas
Example: A 10 ft by 10 ft area covered to a depth of 4 inches needs 1.23 cubic yards. With 5% waste that is 1.30 cubic yards, which weighs about 1.81 tons at a density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
It varies with the stone type, size and moisture. A common range is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Check with your supplier.
How do I calculate tons of gravel?
Find the cubic yards (length x width x depth in feet, divided by 27), then multiply by the density in tons per cubic yard.
What depth of gravel do I need?
It depends on the use, such as a path, a driveway or a drainage bed. Ask your supplier or contractor for the depth that suits your project.
Should I order extra?
A small extra amount, often 5 to 10%, helps cover waste and compaction.
Can I get the volume in cubic yards only?
Yes. The results show cubic yards as well as tons, and our cubic yard calculator covers other materials.
