Fence Calculator
Plan your fence materials. A 150 ft privacy fence with one gate needs about 21 posts and 292 pickets.
How the fence calculator works
Subtract the width of gates from the fence line, then divide the remaining run by your post spacing (usually 6 to 8 feet) to get the number of sections. You need one more post than sections, plus an extra post for each gate. Rails are sections x rails per section, and pickets are run length divided by picket width plus gap.
For 150 ft with one 4 ft gate: 19 sections, 21 posts, 57 rails and 292 pickets. Material cost is about $1,684.00, before concrete, screws and stain.
Do not forget
- Concrete or gravel for post holes (about 1 to 2 bags per post)
- Fasteners, post caps and gate hardware
- Corner and end posts. Measure each straight run separately for fences with corners.
- Check local rules for height limits and property line setbacks.
Labor adds $15 to $30 per linear foot for professionally installed wood fences.
