Shingle Calculator
Enter your roof area and get the number of squares, shingle bundles, ridge cap and underlayment you need. Example: an 1,800 sq ft roof needs 60 bundles with waste included.
How the shingle calculator works
Roofers measure in squares. One square covers 100 square feet of roof surface. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to the square, so the math is: roof area x (1 + waste) / 100 x bundles per square, rounded up.
For the default roof of 1,800 sq ft with 10% waste you get 19.8 squares, which means 60 bundles. Add ridge cap (one bundle covers roughly 30 linear feet) and underlayment, and the material total comes to about $2,386.40.
How much waste should you add?
Use 10% for a simple gable roof, 15% for hips, valleys or many dormers, and up to 20% on complex cut-up roofs. Always round the final bundle count up, because a partial bundle still has to be bought whole.
Measure the roof surface, not the floor plan
A sloped roof is larger than the house footprint. If you only know the footprint, use our roofing calculator, which converts footprint and pitch into surface area.

Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Most shingles are packed three bundles per square (100 sq ft). Some heavier or luxury products need four, so check the label on your product.
How many bundles of shingles do I need for 1,000 square feet?
At 3 bundles per square with 10% waste, 1,000 sq ft needs about 33 bundles.
Does the estimate include labor?
No. It covers shingles and ridge cap only. Installed prices are normally two to three times the material cost.
How much does one bundle cost?
Typical bundles run $30 to $50 depending on brand and shingle type, so change the price field to match your quote.
