Fraction Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions. See the simplified fraction, the mixed number and the decimal.

How the fraction calculator works

Enter the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) of each fraction, pick an operation and the calculator returns the answer in simplest form. It also shows the mixed number and the decimal value.

The rules

Add: a/b + c/d = (a x d + c x b) / (b x d)
Subtract: a/b – c/d = (a x d – c x b) / (b x d)
Multiply: a/b x c/d = (a x c) / (b x d)
Divide: a/b / c/d = (a x d) / (b x c)

The answer is then simplified by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = (1 x 3 + 1 x 2) / (2 x 3) = 5/6, which is 0.833333 as a decimal.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Cross multiply: multiply each numerator by the other fraction denominator, add the results, and put the sum over the product of the denominators. Then simplify.

How do you simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor until no larger number divides both.

    How do you divide fractions?

Flip the second fraction and multiply. For example, 1/2 divided by 1/3 is 1/2 x 3/1 = 3/2.

    What is a mixed number?

A whole number plus a fraction, such as 1 1/2, which equals the improper fraction 3/2.
