Average Calculator

Find the average (mean) of up to six numbers. The calculator also returns the median, sum, smallest and largest value, and the range.

How the average calculator works

Choose how many numbers you have, type them in and the calculator adds them up and divides by the count. That is the average, also called the arithmetic mean. It also finds the median (the middle value when the numbers are sorted), the smallest and largest numbers, and the range.

The formulas

Average = sum of the numbers / how many numbers there are
Range = largest number – smallest number

Example: For 12, 18, 25, 31 and 44 the sum is 130, so the average is 26. The median is 25 and the range is 32.

Use the mean when the numbers are fairly even. If one value is far from the rest, the median often describes the typical value better.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average of numbers?

Add all the numbers together and divide the total by how many numbers there are.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle number after sorting. A very large or small value moves the mean more than the median.

How do I find the average in Excel?

Use the AVERAGE function, for example =AVERAGE(A1:A5). It ignores empty cells and text.

What is the range of a set of numbers?

The range is the largest number minus the smallest number. It shows how spread out the numbers are.

    Can I average negative numbers?

Negative numbers work in the maths, but this form accepts positive numbers only. For negatives, use Excel or a spreadsheet.
