How many vending machines to make $1,000 a month: machines needed by net profit per machine

Updated October 2026 · 5 minute read

“How many machines do I need?” has a simple answer once you know what one machine nets you. This guide shows the math for $1,000 a month in profit, what machines actually net at typical and strong locations, and how much money and time that number of machines takes.

Quick answer
  • Machines needed = $1,000 ÷ net profit per machine.
  • At $100 net per machine: 10 machines. At $200: 5. At $50: 20.
  • Typical sites net about $20–$175 a month; strong sites about $155–$450.1
  • So most operators need roughly 3 to 20 machines, depending on location quality.
  • Time: about 30–60 minutes per machine per week.1

Machines = $1,000 ÷ net per machine, rounded up. Weekly time uses VMFS’s 30 to 60 minutes per machine per week.1

Source: VMFS, How Much Can a Vending Machine Really Make (updated October 2026).1 VMFS sells vending machines, so treat the upper ranges as best cases. Our own vending machine profit guide uses a more conservative $60–$150 net on $300–$600 of sales for a typical machine.

The spread is huge, which is why location matters more than the number of machines. Ten machines in weak spots can earn less than three in strong ones, and cost you more time.

Sales you need across the route

Another way to look at it: total monthly sales needed = $1,000 ÷ net margin.

Net marginTotal sales needed per month
15%$6,667
20%$5,000
25%$4,000
30%$3,333

VMFS’s cost breakdown for snack and drink machines puts product at 40%–50% of sales, location commission at 0%–20%, card processing and telemetry at 5%–7%, and fuel, repairs, insurance and shrink at a few percent each, leaving 20%–30% net.2

Money needed to start

VMFS estimates $4,500 to $8,000 to start with a single machine.1 At that cost:

MachinesStart-up at $4,500–$8,000 each
3$13,500–$24,000
5$22,500–$40,000
10$45,000–$80,000
20$90,000–$160,000

Used or refurbished machines cut this a lot, and a good location is worth more than a new machine. If you finance the machines, the loan payment comes out of the $1,000 too.

Plan your first $1,000 a month

  1. Start with 2 or 3 machines in the best locations you can win, not the most locations.
  2. Track sales per machine every visit for 2 to 3 months to learn your real net per machine.
  3. Divide $1,000 by that number to see how many more machines you need.
  4. Move or remove weak machines before buying more.
  5. Add 10%–15% extra machines to your plan for sites that underperform, as VMFS suggests.2
